Considering I'd lose like 33% of the donation from fees, I'd want to have 1 Bitcoin to make up for it.

That's why I asked Tenboro for a wallet address so i can send him the Bitcoin's directly, Avoiding all fee's 100%!

Forbes had an [www.forbes.com] op-ed on that. Considering how many other "alternate" currencies there are, a ban that singles out Bitcoins would be a quite exceptional validation of the whole system.

The problem is the transfer from real money to bitcoin. The transfer process has a fee of like 35 USD total? 10 from the bitcoin vendor and then the bank fee?

Unless someone has a suggestion on a cheaper alternative instead of a bank transfer.

Heck, can I just mail tenby a check for like 100 USD worth of bitcoins and then transfer that?

Or to anyone else who wants to sell me 100 USD worth of bitcoins by check >.>

Another note on the Forbes article: If the US somehow banned all sites from converting bitcoins to USD, people would still be able to do "in person" transactions for cash.

You can check MtGox's main page. At the very top, they display the highest, lowest, and average cost for 1 BTC. it's constantly fluctuating, which is why Tenboro has to add 10% margin value to the amount of BTC you donated to him. But it should cost ~30 USD for 1 BTC.

Edit: Just to clarify, that's the value of BTC for MtGox. Different exchanges might have different values, just as one currency exchange agency might have a different value from another. I just chose MtGox since Tenboro's using it, and they displayed the values for easy reference.

If any of the other alternate currencies become successful enough that you can actually use them, then I would expect them to be targeted too.

If it works for now, then fine, but I don't see any convincing argument in that article that total war can't occur. He in effect tells governments, "You can't win, so don't start", and they don't tend to go for that one.

Besides lobbying, fear of the unknown is another reason they'd try to ban new transaction processing systems. They don't want to allow that scenario he hopes for, where they lose all ability to track income and transactions, under any circumstances.

The statement I was responding to was, "At least PayPal can't fuck with this one." I'm thinking that PayPal will pull out all the stops to fuck with it, since their very survival depends on it.

Incidentally, the first withdrawal hit my bank account today. So far so good. Hopefully I'll have time to work on the donation interface and instant payment notification stuff this weekend. When that's all done, you won't even have to PM me for anything unless you want to do a direct donation.

Yep, you've got your star and I'm working on mine. My bank is even more sharky than yours (probably because it's regional and uses more intermediaries). It would cost me about $57 in fees (including the 1k Yen fee on Mt Gox's side) to move $100 there. Needless to say I'm looking for ways around that. Dwolla looks to be useable once I get my scanner out of the moving box. Right, need a Verified account, about that. . .

I find it frustratingly ironic that to actually use a currency that's in part designed to avoid having to go through a pile of clunky financial systems. . . I have to go through a pile of clunky financial systems, or find a bill addressed to me. Given that none of the utility accounts on this apartment are in my name, Mt. Gox won't take bank statements, and all of my employers except one are utterly incompetent at updating addresses, this is gonna be fun.

Edit: Fortunately, I just found the letter I'm looking for, and at least they aren't functionally retarded. Might actually be able to do this then.

It looks like the [support.mtgox.com] support page of Mt.Gox recommends [www.aurumxchange.com] AurumXchange ("AurumXchange is an official funding partner of MtGox.") as some alternative method to transfer money into your/a Mt.Gox account. Most the options to add funds as I've seen on the Mt.Gox sites either seem to be a bit of a hassle and time consuming, more so when I'm currently not even in the same country as my bank. The mining system almost looks like it could potentially screw over my monthly data limit.
Also: From what I understand of the support page, we may be able to use VISA and Mastercard sometime in August or September (estimate).

If the bitcoin system currency is relatively new, there's a good chance the value of each bitcoin will increase some more the upcoming few months due to demand and its limited supply. It seem to currently be at roughly 35 USD for 1 BTC.

It's steadily increase in ER is not so much age, rather that it has come into more public prominence lately. It's already experienced both substantial valuations and devaluations in the past.

The verification with a scan seem to be my current obstacle. I guess I'll have to somehow get shit scanned to get my star support our lovely Tenboro.

It seems the only way for me to add funds to Mt.Gox is through bank transfer, and this appears to come with hefty fees attached. I guess I'll have to look for another way...

A few years ago i thought about mining coins but after much research it turned out to be worthless since there are/were loads of Russians with low watt GPU's and server racks full of cheap mobo's just running continuaslly farming everything and then buying more hardware with it to increase their output leaving all the personal computer users with almost nothing to show for their long wait.

Looking at the bitcoin-USD exchange rate history, it appears that acquiring just 1 bitcoin today might just fund an entire gold star donation by the end of April. As long as you held onto it until then. Although it might not do that at all...

Hmmm...this could get interesting for this little community.
