GIMP.

Ah, I see..... Um, I'm guessing it doesn't have a predictive clone stamp, so I'm going to use this to explain. There's this slight pattern the green squares show, so what you should try to do is sync up your CS on one try to keep it up. I'm probably sucking at the explanation, but it's how I do it on CS2 (w/ no predictive stamp), but you'll know you're in sync when there's no difference in pattern after applying the stamp.

Thanks. I just keep getting getting worked up over the very slight offset the clone stamp produces in my CS. With my perfectionist personality, it bugs me to death.
Edit: Woohoo! Managed to get the pattern aligned right with a little patience.

most people leave em untranslated (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
but maybe this helps
also try using a different font for sfx4
EDIT:
also on [puu.sh] http://puu.sh/9Hjb0 there seem to be several english mistakes (emabarassed, it's pages etc. not too sure on other ones (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif))

Hello. Brand new to the whole editing process. I was wanting to get into possibly helping out groups with magazine scans(leveling-cropping-rotating etc) and then move on to cleaning and typesetting. I've read the guides and I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong. Mostly followed rookie84's advice as I use GIMP. Went to a couple groups' cleaning tests for raws and this seems to be the best I've been able to come up with.
Raw: [postimg.org] http://postimg.org/image/bpui9dw21/full/
My attempt: [postimg.org] http://postimg.org/image/8ao9d8mtx/full/
The group's actual release of the image: [postimg.org] http://postimg.org/image/nzrcsvhhv/
Sorry about the selection of image hosting but I have no idea how to get puu.sh working.
So where did I go wrong? It's still super blotchy and speckled. Is the only way to fix it manually redrawing everything? Any input would be appreciated.

To deal with scans that bad you'll have to mess around with filters. On Photoshop I'd do trial-and-error with blur filters prior to leveling.

The group achieved results like that by using Topaz filters, but I don't want to recommend them because people tend to overuse them and burn images like crazy (see: The Lusty Lady Project).

Hmm. Is there anything like that for GIMP? You said you don't recommend them, but is there another way to fix that scan? Also how was the job of everything else? leveling/cleaning bubbles etc?

I don't use gimp, but it seems you can use this [tml.pp.fi] plugin and do a pluginception to run topaz denoise in gimp .

And to make [postimg.org] this to look like this Attached Image This tutorial here pretty much covers evertyhing that group did to clean that page(except for the redraw process) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3okb9iBoUU

Thank's dharumas That was rather helpful. I can't for the life of me find a download of topaz denoise 3 though. I did find 5. I just switched to photoshop as honestly it seems much easier. the one you posted actually looks better then the groups release. Awesome job there. I seem to be missing something though (it I guess might be denoise 3?) but this is what I get from following most of those steps. The leveling he says to do totally kills the image for some reason though. I seem to have the pattern present that release had but you seem to avoid that. Not sure what I missed. How's it look? [postimg.org] http://postimg.org/image/7035guzz5/ Is it straight is another thing? I seem to have the hardest time finding a way to straighten and level colors. the ruler tool doesn't really seem to help either.

Actually I think the SFXes are done pretty well. If there are any you couldn't edit into this due to extensive redrawing needed, just add a * and a note.

alright, can someone help me out with this? I like to draw and I want to try my hand at editing something so I can improve my digital skills, but at the moment I only have SAI and GIMP, and while SAI is great for linework, and GIMP has some great tools, I need to know if these are suitable as a subsitute when editing. I can't really afford photoshop, anyways.

I use GIMP to edit. It's a little slower for some things, but it works well enough.

They did introduce a couple of major bugs with bold text and italic text in 2.8.2 and 2.8.6, so I still use 2.8.0. I haven't checked if either of the bugs are fixed in 2.8.10.

Please compare between the 2 picture. And is it a taboo to modify the dialogue bubble for a better placement of text?

Anyone use a bamboo tablet (or similar) for editing? I recently bought one for a good price and since I can't draw I'm trying to figure out the best way to use it.

Handwritten text is fun.

The font on 1 is more common, through I am not saying font on 2 is bad. In fact, diversifying the font depending on the type of a bubble seems like an interesting idea, ex. keeping font from 2 for the narrator square bubbles...

Also, some spacing (1.5 / double lines) on v2 make for more readable bubbles. Overall I find find v2 more readable, through more artsy font for monsters like on p.6 may be worth trying.

I'll ping the TL who will likely want to offer his thoughts.

I was translator on this one. I much prefer diversified fonts as I think it adds to the drama. I like the new page 3 font. In looking back at the original japanese, the monsters all speak in pure katakana, which would have a similar effect to ALL CAPS in English. Given that most common fonts are already all-caps, it stands to reason that a shift in font is the way to preserve the original author's intent.

On page 6, I'm not sure why the lower 2 bubbles lack punctuation. I'm also not sure what's going on with the text wrapping in the bubble in panel 2. There looks to be one too many S's in there. I think it's more sensible to simply hyphenate prin-cess given that the bubble is more vertical than wide in any case, even after your expansion.

Get with me by PM if you have any questions for me, including about SFX.
