QUOTE(Sonic @ Apr 1 2009, 07:21) What's particularly wrong with Windows Vista, or is your laptop not designed for it? I run it here on my desktop without any issues, it in fact runs more stable than my friend's XP 64-bit system.
The problem now a days is that manufacturers are slapping on vista on systems that can't handle it. My mother was given a business laptop, quite a nice model, except they installed vista business. The problem was Aero, and it was too taxing on the built in video card. All I could do was double the ram to 2GB and it was as smooth as possible. I reduced the Aero effects as well.

Thus it isn't Windows Vista but the hardware. Same thing with my sister's Laptop. Came with Vista, said it was certified with Vista, crashed like hell. We even got tech support to admit it wasn't designed for Vista.

QUOTE(Forth_Lancer @ Apr 1 2009, 05:57) nope, it's because when i format my laptop i didn't remember that i lost my winXP cd and the OS cd that i can use at that time is only this vista. Maybe it's time to try out a Linux distro, then?

well, i hate it because there are so much incompatibility with many software i use and not mentioning that my laptop only have 1 GB RAM, so i really need to preserve the memory to run the program that use a lot of memory but it's not a big thing if i add more memory though. QUOTE(3d0xp0xy @ Apr 1 2009, 16:40) Maybe it's time to try out a Linux distro, then? thanks for the recommendation but i'll stick with windows. i used linux once but somehow i can't find it a good use to me.

Aka, your hardware really isn't up to Vista and you need that backwards computability thing with software. Most incompatibilities for me was the fact I moved to a 64-bit system although there are just a few apps that act weird on Vista.

vista with ol' skool interface, eg: all the icons look like windows 98 and overall less graphic intensive.

You don't have to go THAT far back on graphics to reduce memory. The non transparent version of Areo should work fine. Of course, for me, I'm running full graphic options on and my physical memory usage averages around 2.5 GB. Considering I have 8 GB of physical memory, I have no issues. Even running a game I top out at about 4.2 GB usage. I have rarely seen my usage go above 6 GB as of yet.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
I'm thinking of getting the Ultimate version but I'm also curious about the Windows 7 that's suppose to come out soon.
What do you think, Sonic? You're a bigger computer geek than me.

Vista Ultimate 64 is the solid as far as Vista goes. But I've heard only good things about windows 7 from the beta...

7 is still in beta and there doesn't appear to be an exact date on release. I personally don't blindly jump into a new release. Go for Ultimate and don't worry too much about 7 until it has been out for a while and has a Service Pack on it.

Not really. I could easily run Vista on 2ish year old technology and it would run just fine, with little or low sputtering. The whole needing high specs and running slow aspect came a lot from people who had computers they bought was with XP in mind, which its requirements were based off of technology that was better half of a decade old. A friend of mine has a low budget laptop (under $600) that runs Vista Home Premium without any problems or any significant slowdowns, and he has had said laptop for over a year. There really is no excuse hardware wise anymore. This post has been edited by Spectre: Apr 6 2009, 15:48

As I pointed out, with Vista running full blast with a full Security Suit (AV, Firewall, Intrusion Detection), Winamp, bittorrent and a few browser windows, I only use up 2.5 GB of physical memory. I probably could drop that down to about 1.7 - 1.5 by turning of the Aero effects but why bother when I have 8 GB of RAM? The only time I've seen Vista act like crap personally was when it was installed on hardware that didn't support it. My sister's laptop came with Vista, works like crap and can't even go to 'sleep'. I kept calling Dell since it was under warranty and they finally confused to me that the laptop was not fully compatible with Vista. My question: WHY was it the only OS CHOICE THAN?

Because Dell (other companies have done this as well but I'll keep to the example) wanted to re-tout old hardware with a new OS to make a few extra quick bucks at the expense of usability. It happened when XP came out, and will probably continue to happen in the future. This post has been edited by Spectre: Apr 7 2009, 12:22
