As many of you know - and I have received a LOT of questions about it - Maximum_Joe, one of our most senior staffers, has been AWOL since this summer. Internet relations being what they are, we hadn't able to contact him to confirm if he was okay or whether he was coming back or not. Of course, these things happen on a site that's been around since 1999 (originally) or 2005 (this incarnation) - people leave for various personal real-life reasons all the time, only to suddenly come back years later going "oh hey this place is still here".

Unfortunately, that isn't happening this time. I have just received word from Joe's brother that he has passed away, and that he wanted us to know.

According to him, it doesn't seem to be any foul play, nor was there any proof he did it himself. I don't have any further details.

Joe has been a member of this site for almost a decade, and while he was not the oldest active staff member, he was arguably the most senior in terms of activity and contributions. The countless hours he has devoted to everything from tagging to gallery cleanup to forum moderation to wiki editing, as well as generally managing and directing a lot of the minute details about those things, have been much appreciated by those who have been paying attention.

It is a big hole to fill, and he will be sorely missed, both personally as a friend, and as a staff member for this site.

Oh damn. That's a shock… I wondered where he'd gone off to, but never expected this.

I don't really know how to react to this, but it's a shame 2020 took him too. Despite my personal dislike of bananas, he also uploaded a ton of other galleries I liked and he always seemed to put a superhuman amount of time and effort into this site. He was very appreciated.
I also have fond memories of some of his jokes on the forums and on imageboards, which I have saved somewhere or another in a humour folder. I might have to dig that up now.

Edit: found one of them, at least; From the "the sky is falling" scare in the summer of 2019.

Ouch. I had the feeling that it was the reason, and I was hoping that it wasn't that. Nobody believes me when I say that death is a common reason why people go missing all of a sudden.

We weren't friends, we weren't strangers either. I suck at expressing myself in difficult cases like this, so I'll convey my feelings that way: F

Most people hate Joe for things he did while he was moderating. Maybe you didn't see eye to eye with him on a tag, or you think he was harsh on you. People don't realize that how you act while moderating and how you are personally are separate.
Even if it was something as simple as downvoting your gallery comment, you should factor in the implied stress from his position.
I haven't been here for long, but even I could tell he was a good person.

How he changed his signature and the thread he made before leaving will haunt me for a while.

Tenboro he was intrinsicly a part of this place wasn't he? I know you couldn't have done a lot of it without his efforts, and personally I was hoping the worst wasn't the outcome here and he was going to pull a Sonic and just show up out of the blue like he'd walked off and randomly decided to come back. I thought it was stress or covid or whathaveyou.

I also remembering cracking a joke about him finally getting busted for illegal canadian 2d, which in retrospect I feel like shit for saying even jokingly.

I respected that man. He did things you couldn't put a gun to my head and get me to do for my life. He lived in part to keep this place running. He can't be replaced, will be mourned and his presence missing will be felt.

Don't feel too bad dude. The idea that he could have just been arrested gave me, and I am sure a lot of others, some hope at the time.

He will live on in the hearts of everyone who loved him. As a dutyful moderator, even those who disliked him will remember him.

I thought of him as a senpai who was sometimes strict but only out of concern that if he looked away, it could have hurt the site. I'm grateful for all his contributions.

RIP Joe, I'll never forget the assistance over the years even predating my account. You were a mixed bag of surprises but you came through big time last year and that'll always be remembered along with your many contributions over time. May you be in a better place now.

Really sad to hear that. Didn't knew the person closely but he was a very diligent and hardworking mod this site was blessed with. I was a Mod and even was an Administrator of a site years back so I know its a hard job taking care of so many stuffs and keep the site clean.

He was great moderator always shutting down nonsense with his dry-wit.
Trying to improve the site in many different ways.
A truly nice guy when you talked to him on irc and via pm.
Probably our first interaction was when I risked getting banned from tagging and now I'm a tag mod.
He really was great guy.
