After swapping out the old logic used for Source Nexus as part of a wider update related to image limits back in July, it became obvious that the old logic had been broken in a couple of notable ways. For one, while it always calculated image limits based on the size of the original image, it didn't actually pass that value to the resource tracker, so it would use the default cost of 1. Secondly, the condition for when to it could be used was based on an old hardcoded value (10 MB) rather than what's used everywhere else on the site (3MB for PNG, 4MB for JPG).

Obviously, this means while Source Nexus is now working as intended, it's "worse" than the old broken Source Nexus, and people are complaining that it "doesn't do anything" anymore. I'm not going to change it back to being broken, but I am considering changing it so that instead of allowing you to browse with the original image (which really is a bit of an issue resource-wise), it'll give you the donator pricing for archive downloads.

So, the question is, would you rather keep Source Nexus like it is right now, or would you want it to give the donator pricing for archive downloads instead of today's functionality? No, you can't have both.

This question is only for non-donators who either have the perk, or who intend to get it if it's changed, or who intend to get it but won't if it's changed.

Donators and H@H clients receive a 50% discount.

I saw that, otherwise I wouldn't even point out that -50% figure, but I just want to confirm in case something changed.

How do you even use the source nexus perk? In image size settings i can only go up to 2400x and it says that its unlocked for donators. people with any hath perk and UID below 3 million.

Probably because either the filesize is being too big, or you didn't select the "Auto" Image Size Settings when you activated the perk. Try again for this gallery:

The ones you are having trouble with are probably bc of them exceeding a certain threshold. the 3MB limit for PNG.

Although I don't remember exactly what it was, I had some problems with this hath perk too, so in the end I just gave up trying to make big images original size. Now I use the AUTO vertical 900 pixels for Image Size Settings (fit's my screen better) and don't use original image setting.

But couldn't get SN to work for that one either, but what about this image:

yea i thought it was a jpg because it got resampled to jpg, but when i downloaded the original file its a png.

Why not add a new hath perk to provide the discount? It can increase the hath demand as well, I guess.

What would this mean for donators? Would it stack their discount up (to 100% if cumulative which sounds like a terrible idea or 75% if multiplicative) or just be less useful for those people?

I’m for changing the perk. Doesn’t have to necessarily be the discount idea either, although I can’t think of anything else. Images over 3MB and 4MB are extremely common in newer galleries.

Edit: forgot to mention that I’ve had the perk for a while and don’t really use it. Viewing source images directly on the site doesn’t really make sense in practice, they take a lot longer to load and probably put more strain on the infrastructure than just downloading an archive or using H@H downloader. The perk as it is is just going to get more and more useless overtime as I feel the average file size keeps going up over time. Right now there’s a sizable portion of galleries that the perk doesn’t work at all on.

I'd say just make keep it comes with donation for free, and refund the hath to the star people who already bought it.

As a non-donator (sorry; BTC is haard), I'd rather it stays un-broken and functioning. Been on the precipice of grabbing Source Nexus for a long time. But I have enough credits/GP that archive download costs aren't really as big of an issue to me as they used to be.

There's definitely more value in being able to browse the larger files on the site itself, in my opinion, than in the 50% discount. Only reason I haven't jumped on it already is that only some of the screens I use are large enough to warrant it.
(As an aside, I have a personal script (that I am not sharing, due to potential for abuse) that lets me view the images from the 'download original' links inline. That's the other reason I didn't grab the Source Nexus perk already.)

I don't feel this so strongly that I'd get pissed off if I got a 50% discount, and in fact I would be more likely to grab the perk if that were what it did. But in theory I do like the functionality that it currently offers. And if we can't have both, then that's basically my thoughts on it.

I think other people might benefit more from the current functionality, even if for me personally I'd probably benefit more from a 50% discount.

I'd like an option to view images at full resolution, recompressed to jpeg at a reasonable quality, like 85. So the filesize isn't huge, and the download time isn't long, but you can still see all of the detail. I used source nexus to check details for tagging, not for archiving the pictures.

Is browsing full quality mainly for people that want to rip images rather than download or torrent archives?
