Basically, I'm currently struggling to find a story that I read here once, and I'm being stymied by the fact that it didn't have more than maybe four or six tags back then (including the technical tags) and nothing I'm searching can hit it (more details on that are over on my post on the Requests and Bounties board, if you want to help). But while I've been searching, I've also been wondering about how many more mangas are unintentionally hidden because they were never tagged properly and were pushed too quickly off the front page. And furthermore, I've seen hundreds of galleries over the years that have been inadequately tagged, situations where there's a bunch of details for the female category, but only 'Sole Male' for the man and nothing else, despite the man doing a LOT in the scene.
So, my question is, is there a system already in place to track these unsearchable galleries? If there is, great! Despite my account's age, I rarely peek into the backend of things, so there's a lot I don't know (I've only been on this forum twice). Feel free to enlighten me and send me on my way.
If there is not... might I suggest adding a system that does do that? Using features that I already know about, you could create a new technical tag called "
Undertagged Gallery", and create a system that counts the amount of tags in each category and applies the tag to any that do not meet a minimum amount, then flag the tag for removal (automatically, ideally, but it may have to be done manually) after that amount is exceeded or certain criteria are met, based on rules set by the system.
Examples:
- If the Parody category is empty, apply the tag until the work is marked either with the correct source material or original.
- If the Male category is under the minimum amount, apply the tag until the minimum amount is reached, unless the 'females only' tag is present, and vice versa.
It might be more useful to apply the tag to each category individually so the problem ones can be sorted (e.g. 'F:Undertagged Gallery'), or to split the tag by the specific problem and sticking them all in the Other category (e.g. 'Missing Artist', 'Low Male Tags', etc). I can also foresee some issues with balancing the minimum amount of tags with the actual content of the story (e.g. a story of a woman realising that she's a lesbian might only have one page of male/female sex to show that she's not happy, which would exclude the 'females only' tag, but might not have enough content to meet the minimum amount, let alone overcome the Presence rule), so there might need to be a way to declare the mistake, either through the mistagging assistance thread here on the forums or maybe adding an option the technical section of the report button. Not to mention a way to request the removal of the 'Undertagged Gallery' tag (same solution as mistagging) and permanently mark the gallery so it doesn’t get flagged again.
I have no idea what the backend of this website looks like but I do understand that any website with an active userbase tends to be held together purely by string and duct-tape, so I have no idea if this is even remotely feasible without snapping the code in two. It would certainly be much harder and time consuming to retroactively apply the 'Undertagged Gallery' tag to existing galleries than to fresh ones. To that end, I apologise if I'm rambling about an impossible (or already solved!) topic.
Thank you for your consideration, I hope that my suggestion stimulates some interesting discussions and decisions, but feel free to call me an overthinking, blind idiot if you need to :P
